What Is It?

The Online Workshop is a 2-day, live, online training event aimed to encourage and equip you in the skills needed to read, understand, and proclaim the Word of God.

The Online Workshop is a 2-day, live, online training event aimed to encourage and equip you in the skills needed to read, understand, and proclaim the Word of God. The Workshop includes times set aside for 1) Principles of Exposition (instructional sessions on how to better handle biblical texts), 2) Small Group Practice (when you will share and receive feedback on one passage of scripture you prepare in advance), and 3) Expositions (the opportunity to sit under the word). Each of these sessions is carefully designed to be interrelated for the greatest value in improving your work. In other words, this is a Workshop and not a conference. If you cannot be at all the sessions, then it really isn’t for you.

It is important to note: Partial participation is not permitted. Our pedagogical commitments in the small group sessions as well as the cumulative relationship between the small group and plenary sessions, full participation is required.

Who Should Attend?

The Online Workshops are generally for men who are responsible for regularly preaching and teaching. We also welcome those in bi-vocational ministries as well as those training for ministry.

How Should I Prepare?

During the small groups, you will have an opportunity to get feedback on work you’ve prepared in advance.

David R. Helm

Lead Pastor, Christ Church (Chicago)

David serves as the lead pastor of Christ Church in Chicago and Chairman of the Board of the Charles Simeon Trust, an organization dedicated to the sound preaching of God’s Word. Before that, he served as Lead Pastor in the Hyde Park congregation of Holy Trinity Church. A graduate of Wheaton College, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, David is ordained in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and serves on the council of The Gospel Coalition. For Crossway, he authored 1 & 2 Peter and JudeThe Big Picture Story Bible, and contributed to Preach the Word: Essays on Expository Preaching in Honor of Kent Hughes. He also authored One-to-One Bible Reading for Matthias Media and the 9Marks volume Expositional Preaching.

James Seward

Senior Pastor, Maple Avenue Baptist Church

James is Senior Pastor of Maple Avenue Baptist Church. Before that, he served as Associate Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Lindale, Texas. James completed his undergraduate education at the University of Chicago, where he was also part of the founding core of Holy Trinity Church and served as a pastoral intern. He went on to complete a master’s degree in the Biblical Exegesis program at Wheaton College where he also served on the pastoral staff of College Church under Kent Hughes. James has traveled to Vietnam to train pastors and has been involved with the Workshops on Biblical Exposition for more than 10 years.

Each day has several breaks, including 45 minutes for lunch.
Text assignments will come from Genesis 1-12.

Participation

This Online Workshop is designed to be interactive, and full participation is required. Each participant will need video access to Zoom video conferencing and a reliable internet connection.
